Axe falls on illegal structures along Pernem coast

Mapusa: A  demolition squad on Sunday began  bringing down all illegal structures put up in no-development areas, which are  turtle nesting sites at Morjim, Ashvem and Mandrem beaches of Pernem taluka.

Following a NGT direction, around 107 illegal structures at turtle nesting  sites along Pernem coastal belt were  identified by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority. The structures  were served demolition notices in May this year.

Subsequently some of the shack operators had voluntary demolished their structures, while a few others had obtained stay from court against the demolition.

The demolition drive that began at Ashvem was supposed to start on Saturday. However, the drive  was postponed to Sunday due to some technical issue.

The drive, which  is being conducted in the presence of a strong posse of police personnel, is  expected to go on for next few days.

On Sunday morning, Pernem deputy collector Chandrakant Shetkar, Pernem mamlatdar Anant Malik and GCZMA officials among other government officials were present at the spot.
