With the third Mandovi bridge ‘Atal Setu’ thrown open to four-wheelers and other heavy vehicles, the perennial traffic jams on the stretch of highway from near the Malim Circle to O’Coqueiro circle have become a thing of the past thereby relieving the commuters of hardships.
Traffic police have also been posted on both sides of the ‘Atal Setu’ to stop the two-wheelers from using it mainly during peak hours and they are being questioned about the driving licence and asked not to travel over it.
Many citizens said that motorists are over-speeding on the ‘Atal Setu’ and driving at 70 to 80 km per hour and violating 50 km per hour speed limit and as such on Saturday evening, first accident occurred on the bridge involving many four-wheelers.
Commuters and pedestrians hailing from Journalist Colony, Pundalik Nagar, Kranti Nagar, Goa Housing Board Colony and others have suggested that traffic police be deployed near Maruti Sai Service Circle to control the peak hour rush of four-wheelers, two-wheelers, and pedestrians particularly of college and school students crossing the road right in front of Hero showroom.
Work of painting of the bridge piers is going on a war footing and would be completed very soon, stated sources involved in the work.
