PANAJI: Anura Prabhu Desai won her first international silver medal and with prize money of $440 in the Womens singles of the Maritius International 2017 in Mauritius on Sunday.
In her first attempt at the senior level Anura lost to her Indian compatriot Shikha Gautam 8-21,21-17,19-21 in a final that was taken to the wire by both Indian players.
“ I have just entered the ladies sigles and have changed my academy. I expect the new exposure to do me a world of good,” Anura Prabhu Desai had told The Navhind Times before her deprture to Mauritius.
Apart from winning the senior Anura has won the distinction of being the first Goan ladies badminton player to have won an international medal.
Anura Prabhu Desai’s climb to the finals was not easy. In the quarterfinals she got the better of Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq of Maldives 21-6, 21-14.She started comfortably in the first set but Razzaq from Maldives put up resistance in the secon which was eventually overcome by Anura.
In the semifinals,Anura won against Grace King of England 21-10, 21-4.
“It is a great feeling. I am happy that everyone’s perseverance is paying. These are my first steps. I intend to do far better,” wrote Anura in a email reply to The Navhind Times. “ I am just waiting to reach home,” she concluded.
Anura is the goodwill ambassador of Geno Pharmaceuticals.
