Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged multi-crore mining scam, on Thursday, examined Anil Counto in connection with the jetty and acquisition of land for a road at Kothambi in Bicholim.
Sources informed that Counto has denied having carried out any mining activity by him or his company but has told the investigating agency that he acted as a logistic service provider and allowed his jetty to be used by more than 10 different individuals/companies.
These individuals/companies are suspected to be involved in illegal mining and are already on the radar of SIT, the sources said.
Counto has disclosed that the jetty was allowed to be used towards the rent paid per tonne of iron ore by traders in transporting iron ore, the sources informed.
SIT’s claim that the said jetty and the approval for approach road accorded by then mines minister Digambar Kamat and thereafter used for transportation of iron ore is corroborated by the statements of Counto, the sources said adding that SIT will further probe each individuals / companies involved in transportation of iron ore through the jetty.
However, speaking to the media Counto claimed that someone is trying to defame him by linking him with the mining scam.
“I am surprised. I have social status. Someone is trying to defame me and I don’t know what is the reason”, said Counto.
In connection with the ongoing probe into the mining scam, the SIT has asked Chetan Timblo to appear before the investigating officer on Friday.
Meanwhile, the SIT has written to a bank to freeze 125 fixed deposit accounts of Imran traders.
The sources informed that SIT probe revealed that out of the proceeds of crime, the Imran traders and others had deposited cash (in crores of rupees) by means of fixed deposits in the bank through different fixed deposit accounts.
