All the world’s a stage

NT BUZZ

Sunaparanta – Goa Centre for the Arts in association with Abhivyaktee presented the Hindi play titled ‘Yatra… The Journey Within’ at the Sunaparanta amphitheatre, as part of the World Theatre Day 2019 celebrations.

`Yatra…The Journey Within’, an adaptation of Athol Fugard’s ‘The Road to Mecca’ is written and directed by Saish Deshpande. The play is about the revolt of a woman, a social outcast in her village and her journey towards self-realisation and freedom.

Initiated in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), World Theatre Day is observed across the world to create awareness about the importance of theatre in all its forms and share the joy for theatre with others. An important feature of these celebrations is the circulation of the World Theatre Day message which is read out before each performance. This year’s message, written by Cuban Stage director, playwright, theatre educator and professor, Carlos Celdrán, was read out by Shambhavi Deshpande of Abhivyaktee.

Celdrán said: “You do not have to go far away, or move from where you are. The public is wherever you exist. Your journey is vertiginous, and nobody may measure or silence it. Nor may anybody recognise it to the right extent, it is a journey through the imagination of your people, a seed that is sown in the most remote of lands: the civic, ethical and human conscience of your spectators.” The performance was followed by a positive audience interaction with cast and crew members of the play.
