PANAJI: Dempo Goodwill Ambassador Akanksha Salunkhe won the Maharashtra Junior Open Squash Tournament defeating Aishwarya Bhattacharya 11-7, 11-6, 11-7 in the finals held in Mumbai on Sunday.
Akanksha, who had won the tournament last year as well, was seeded second and given direct entry into the quarters, where she outclassed Aditi Prasad of Maharashtra 11-3, 11-2, 11-1, and in the semis got the better of Nikita Joshi of Mumbai 11-1, 11-2, 13-11.
Akanksha has been very impressive with her performance this year winning all the domestic open tournaments that she participated viz Indian Squash Academy, Chennai (in May), NSCI, Mumbai (in July), Indian Junior Open, Chennai (in August) and the latest Maharashtra Junior Open.
She won Girls U-17 No 1 Indian rankings in just few months after migrating to the category in January this year.
Akanksha will next participate in the Pune and Jaipur Open this month followed by Junior Nationals at the end of October.
Akanksha’s younger brother, Yash Salunkhe, also had a good run at the tournament as he stood 7th.
