Panaji: Fifty five women from Goa are expected to participate in the 1st National Women Masters Athletic Championship being organised by Goa Masters Athletic Association on June 29 and 30 at the Bambolim Athletic Stadium, Bambolim.
“There will be an athlete who is 80 years old from Goa and 661 entries from women from 19 states of India participating in the two day event,” stated Alina Saldhana, MLA and chairperson of the organising committee, during an interaction with the media at Kala Academy on Tuesday.
“We should use the event as a window to encourage the interest in sports in our children. Sports is the basis of good growth,” emphasised Sulakshana Sawant, president of Goa State Women Self Help Group Association and deputy patron of the event.
Maharashtra is going to be represented by 135 athletes, Tamil Nadu 109 and Gujarat 81.
The two-day event will see participants taking part in short distance races, jumps and throws. There will be a 5-km walk too taking the total number of athletic events to 19.
