5-star Lakshay Garg helps Goa bowl out Assam for 175

GUWAHATI: Lakshay Garg took a maiden five-wicket haul as Goa bowled out Assam for 175 on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy, Elite C, Round 7 match on Saturday.

In reply, Goa were 66 for 3 at the close of opening day’s play.

Goa skipper Sagun Kamat won the toss and opted to field first at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Lakshay struck in his first over of the innings as he removed opener Pallavkumar Das for a five-ball duck.

After suffering the early jolt, Biplab Saikia and Rishav Das led the recovery as the duo added 54 runs for the second wicket before Krishna Das separated them in the 17th over. From thereon, hosts Assam kept losing wickets at regular intervals and at one stage were reduced to 135/8.

Gokul Sharma (22) and captain Amit Sinha (20) did try to arrest the slide but couldn’t as Lakshay got rid of them in his successive overs.

Swarupam Purkayastha struck 31 off 59 and built a handy 38-run partnership with Ranjit Mali for the ninth wicket. Purkayastha was the last man to be dismissed as the hosts were bowled out inside 51 overs.

Lakshay finished with 5/73 while Krishna Das and Felix Alemo chipped in with two wickets each.

In reply, Goa started well with the openers adding 41 runs before Arup Das triple-strike left them in a spot of bother. He struck twice in an over to dismiss captain Sagun Kamat (29) and Darshan Misal, who was promoted to number 3. The southpaw could not last more than a ball and was sent back after being trapped in front of the wickets. Arup then added the scalp of Amit Verma (2) before the end of day’s play.

Goa are 66/3 and trail the hosts by 109 runs.

Brief Scores: Goa 66/3 (Arup Das 3/33) trail Assam 175 (Biplab Saikia 41; Lakshay Garg 5/73) by 109 runs.
