JAJPUR (ORISSA): Five police personnel were injured, one of them critically, as a mob pelted stones at them in Orissa’s Jajpur district on Sunday evening, the police said.
The superintendent of police, Mr D S Kuttey said the police team rushed to Odei village, about 25 km from here, following complaint by a villager Mohan Mallick that his family priest was being locked and assaulted.
The priest had gone to the village for conducting the marriage of the son of Malik but was allegedly locked in a room and assaulted by villagers since Malik was facing social boycott for purchasing a plot near a place of worship a few months ago.
As five policemen reached the village, inhabited by scheduled caste people, on hearing about the ‘incident’ they were attacked with stones and pushed by villagers causing injuries to all, the SP said. The mob also damaged their jeep.
The injured police personnel were admitted to the district headquarters hospital where the condition of a constable was stated to be critical.
Additional force was deployed in the village to restore normalcy.
