4,631 houses in Bardez lack toilets



A total of 4,631 houses in Bardez taluka lack the basic facility of toilet and the taluka requires around 603 community toilets as per a recent survey carried out across Goa by district rural development agency.

With an aim to make Goa open defecation free (ODF), the state government has, through the district rural development agency (DRDA) conducted an individual household latrine survey under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Nital Goem. The agency, in collaboration with self-help groups, undertook the survey of all households across the state in a phase-wise manner.

In Bardez, which comprises of 33 panchayats, altogether 45,697 households were surveyed by trained self-help groups wherein the members visited every house along with the prescribed format to obtain data, which was then compiled. As per the compiled data, out of the 45,697 houses surveyed, 37,072 houses had toilet facility and 4,631 houses were found to be lacking toilets.

As per the records, the survey was to be conducted on around 54,128 houses in all the panchayats. However, 45,697 houses were covered, which is around 85 per cent, and around 8,431 houses were left out due to various reasons.

Among the panchayats, Thivim has the most number of houses numbering 371 which are without toilet facility, while Nachinola panchayat has the lowest number of houses, which is 52, sans toilets.

Besides individual toilets, there is also a need for around 603 community toilets in the taluka, as 18 out of the 33 panchayats in the taluka do not have even a single community toilet.

The Anjuna panchayat has the highest number of community toilets, which is 311, followed by Penha de Franca, which has 126 community toilets. Thivim panchayat has no community toilet.

The panchayats in Bardez with houses sans toilets are Aldona (254), Arpora-Nagoa (101), Assagao (134), Assonora (74), Anjuna Caisua (188), Bastora (98), Calangute (85), Camurlim (285), Candolim (60), Colvale (187), Guirim (256), Moira (74), Nachinola (52), Nadora (73), Nerul (161), Oxel (262), Parra (75), Pilerne Marra (77), Penha de Franca (145), Pirna (212), Pomburpa Olaulim (167), Reis Magos (141), Revora (166), Salvador do Mundo (144), Saligao (47), Sangolda (82), Siolim Marna (153), Siolim Sodiem (135), Socorro (79), Sirsaim (39), Thivim (371), Ucassaim Paliem, Punola (83) and Verla Canca (171).
