30-40% people avail of schemes only for subsidy: Tawadkar

PONDA: The ‘Goa vet directory 2015’ was released at the hands of Minister for Animal Husbandry Ramesh Tawadkar in Animal Husbandry training office at Curti-Ponda on Saturday.

Animal Husbandry director Benjamin Braganza, managing director of Goa Dairy Dr Navasu Sawant, Dr H Ingale, Dr Raghunath Dhuri were among others present on the occasion. Tawadkar said that around 30 to 40 per cent of the people avail of schemes only for subsidy, and once they get it, they fail to venture into farming activities.

“We will have to get rid of such mentality. Efforts will have to be made to attract people in farming,” he said.

He said that due to tourist flow the demand for milk, eggs and chicken has increased.

“We should look at all aspects, how we can be self-sustainable in the area of milk production and poultry. There is a lot of demand for all these products, and it can be best medium of revenue generation,” the minister said. He said the directory will help the farmers. He applauded the efforts of association, and appealed to them to suggest new ideas to motivate farmers.

President of Goa Veterinary Association Dr Raghunath Dhuri said that the members wanted that a directory be published and hence they worked towards the goal.

Dr Braganza also spoke on the occasion. Dr Mahendra Bale compered the programme while Dr Anuradha Naik proposed the vote of thanks.
