Sources said that the DRI sleuths intercepted a Goan passenger upon his arrival at the airport by Air Arabia flight (G9-492) from Sharjah during the wee hours on Saturday. The sleuths searched the baggage of the passenger thoroughly, but could not find any smuggled material. And, so, later carried out the personal search which resulted in the seizure of 3.229 kg gold, worth Rs 1 crore.
The seizure consists of four gold bars and gold chain which was tied around waist.
After thorough investigation and interrogation, the passenger revealed that the gold consignment was handed over to him by another passenger from Kozhikode-Kerala, who had also travelled by the same flight.
Based upon the information, the DRI sleuths succeeded in nabbing the passenger who had handed over the gold consignment. He was traced in the baggage hall before he could exit the customs arrival hall.
The passenger has admitted his involvement in smuggling the gold, and also admitted to having handed over the gold to his fellow passenger.
Both the passengers were arrested as per the guidelines of the Board of Central Board of Excise, Customs and Services Tax, New Delhi. Further investigation is in progress.
