Crime Branch police have arrested a matka bookie who was allegedly accepting matka bets in a car in the city. The car which was used by the alleged accused to accept matka bets has been attached, informed the police.
According to police, the alleged accused, identified as Chandrashekar Gawas, was arrested on Thursday night in the city. Police said that Gawas was allegedly accepting matka bets using a car and that he adopted this new modus operandi to avoid being noticed. However, the Crime Branch police based on source information conducted a raid and arrested Gawas. In a separate raid conducted also on Thursday night in the city, the Crime Branch police arrested Tulshidas Naik for allegedly accepting matka bets. Both were later released on bail, the police said.
Meanwhile, on Friday, the Crime Branch police arrested four persons in connection with matka gambling activities during a raid conducted in a building at Sada-Vasco. The four persons-Hemant Palekar, Pavan Kolamkar, Tushar Mandrekar, Shitij Chari were arrested under the Goa Public Gambling Act and later released on bail. Police during the raid seized cash amounting to Rs 6990 and other gambling articles. Police informed that one more alleged accused Suraj Chodankar alias Balan is absconding.
According to police, the raid was conducted based on source information that matka gambling activities were being controlled by alleged accused from the location at Sada-Vasco wherein they used to collect the daily bets from the matka bookies.
